In 1906, this elegant fob was given as an award, most likely for excelling in pigeon shooting. A fascinating combination of charm, function and history, watch fobs are as stylish as they are interesting. Until the advent of the wristwatch (around World War II), people used pocket watches to keep time. For men, the watches were hung from a cord or chain and stashed in (you guessed it!) a small pocket; for women, they were pinned to the chest and worn as a brooch. Whereas a watch might be rather humble, the illustrious fob lent a dash of personality to one's unique style: they could be made from any material and of infinite possible design. Fobs were often presented to the wearer as an award for sporting contests or years of service, and were worn with great pride!

This handsome fob was handcrafted in Birmingham, England, around 1906. It features a painterly enamel depiction of a dove perched before a sunrise sky, set in an elegant gold mounting. On the back is the engraved inscription “Presented by W. Jordan Esq. to G. Blewitt Winner of Cup - 1905 O.S. & F.S.” This fob measures 47mm long by 26.7mm wide, and weighs 7.8 grams. Hallmarks show the anchor for Birmingham, 9 for 9 karat gold, .375 for 37.5 percent pure, and the date of 1906. It also bears the maker’s mark of F&S.

Its easy to imagine the pride Mr. "G. Blewett" felt, displaying this lovely piece as he checked to see if the train was on time! This beautiful fob is one-of-a-kind, and would be fabulous worn as a necklace or on a watch chain.
