Antique Edwardian Garland-style Diamond and 9.5ct Aquamarine Platinum Bow Necklace c. 1910

The last decade of the nineteenth century, the fin de siècle, was a time when the rejection of machine-made jewelry that had once been welcomed as an innovation, caused an about face in fashion and design.  Jewelry went from large and ostentatious to ethereal and delicate almost overnight. Employing what was to become known as the “garland” style or 'style guirlande' in France, jewelers who chose not to embrace Art Nouveau or Arts and Crafts styles borrowed the fluidity of their lines and incorporated them into more traditional motifs thereby creating Edwardian jewelry. The “new” designs of the Edwardian Era had their roots firmly planted in eighteenth-century jewelry. The Court of Versailles was the inspiration for customers who desired more classically and aristocratically styled jewels. Ornamental motifs from earlier centuries were available through pictorial records from pattern books which began circulating freely beginning in the 1850s.  In particular, Cartier encouraged his designers to wander the streets of Paris looking at seventeenth and eighteenth century architecture for jewelry inspiration.  Garlands and ribbons, laurel wreaths, bow knots, tassels and lace were rendered with a new lightness thanks to new advances made in platinum fabrication.
Here is a fine example the garland style! An antique Edwardian garland-style diamond and aquamarine Platinum Bow Necklace that I discovered on my last trip to Paris.  This pendant has a rich and lively faceted tear drop aquamarine that is 9.45 carats is size and measures about 20.3 x 11.8 x 8 mm. The platinum bow is embedded with 28 lovely sparkling rose cut diamonds each 1 mm in diameter.  As if that was not enough, there is one larger full cut old European diamond above the bow, a sparkly round gem which weighs approximately 0.15 carats. This stunning necklace was handcrafted around 1910, mostly likely in Paris.  The chain is 16" long and the pendant and chain together weighs 9.9 grams.  The overall measurement of the bow is 35 mm wide, it's 35.5 mm from the top of the bow to bottom of aquamarine and 52 mm from the top diamond to the bottom of bow.
Sometimes I like to refer to items as wearable from 'blue jeans to ball gowns,' this is more along the lines of 'Wedding dresses to White tie'!!
