Antique Enamel and Silver Brooch showing Ladies at a Well

The bible has been inspiring art for millennia, and what is jewelry if not art? This wonderful brooch depicts two women at a well filling a pitcher with water. Perhaps one of them is Rebecca? She was the maiden that gave water to man and beast and became the wife of Isaac. Or, perhaps it’s just a depiction of pastoral life. Either way, I found this charming silver brooch to be quite beautiful!

This beautiful brooch is hand crafted in silver and set with a lovely enamel plaque. The brooch measures 52.5 mm across at the widest point, the enamel plaque at the center measures 27.5 mm across. This pin is marked on the back and on the C-clasp, but I couldn’t find the marks in my book. I feel as though it may have been made in Eastern Europe, and dates to about 1870. I purchased it in Amsterdam on a fine summer day.
