Antique Enamel Silver Marius Hammer Earrings Lovely and Long

Scandinavian art and design has been crafting distinctive jewelry since at least the time of the Vikings. It was the 19th century, however, when this region really made its artistic mark. The region began to specialize in silver work, making use of gemstones and natural pearls. During the 20th century, they began looking to the past to influence their designs, especially indigenous craft-oriented arts. Marius Hammer was a famed silversmith and artist working during this time, he used bright colors, complex enamel work, and structural designs and his beautiful and intricate work left a lasting legacy.

This pair of amazing blue enamel and silver drop earrings were handcrafted in Norway by the highly skilled Marius Hammer. They were made around 1910 and feature a scrolling motif with light blue enamel in a navette shape set among white and dark blue enamel circles. These dazzling danglers measures 89 x 24 mm and together they weigh 13.9 mm. They bear no marks and have been acid tested. I suspect that these earrings actually started off life as halves of a brooch, although I purchased them just as you see them.

Marius Hammer was born in Bergen, Norway in 1847. He was the son of a goldsmith and followed in his father’s footsteps, learning the trade and establishing a workshop in Bergen in 1871. He crafted tableware, cutlery, and of course, stunning jewelry. In 1880 he began specializing in traditional Norwegian jewelry and plique-à-jour enamel work focusing in on the tourism market. In 1885, his firm became court provider to the Prince of Wales. His work was highly sought after due to its fine craftsmanship and Danish influence. He had a style of delicate beauty that showed in his world-famous enamel work.
