This cross is often referred to as a Jeannette cross, legend says that during St. John’s Day (St. Jean in French), field workers would buy a cross like this one to take home to their sweetheart as a sign of love and fidelity. This particular design of cross seems to have originated in the Savoie region of France, near Mont Blanc in the Alps. It seems that this style became so popular that it was adopted very quickly by the other regions of France.
This antique embossed 18 karat gold cross was handcrafted around 1830. It’s a beautiful piece that measures 58 mm from top to bottom and 41 mm across, it weighs 6.5 grams. It bears a hallmark of a eagles head (the French purity mark for 18 karat gold) as well as a French makers mark.
A simple token of faith goes a long way, and this one would look perfect on an elegant gold chain.
