Antique French Silver Gilt Plique a Jour Pendant Virgin Mary

Hold this beauty up to the window and witness the light of day shining through; the French called it just that ‘Plique a Jour’ for ‘Light of Day’. This beautiful Art Nouveau St. Mary pendant was handcrafted in France around 1900. It features the Virgin Mary at the center of a brightly colored design of swooping enamel. While I do sometimes come across these wonderful Mary pendants with plique a jour panels, I was particularly impressed by this one with it’s multitudes of color. Red, green and two colors of blue add something extra to this piece. This antique round silver pendant has been gilded and still retains some of its golden tone. It bears no marks, but it signed ‘P.L Dasset’, a French artist that I’ve had other pieces by over the years. Overall, this piece measures 31 mm north to south and 23 mm across, and it weighs 4.6 grams.

This faithful little pendant would look elegant on a thin gold chain around the wrist or on the neck.
