Antique French Silver Mother of Pearl Necklace Marcasite Paste Bow

Okay, so I have a confession to make, while I pride myself on my usual means of shopping, going to Europe and pawing through markets and vendor’s stock, this last time I did my shopping not in person, but via Zoom! As it turns out, I don’t like it. Honestly, I don’t know how you all do it, buy jewelry without feeling it, without touching it and holding it in your hands. I guess that’s why I offer free return shipping and full refunds, because I can’t imagine taking the same leap of faith that my customers take every day.
So, when I bought this necklace via Zoom I was a little worried that it wouldn’t be the quality that I was hoping it was. I was, therefore, exceedingly happy when this beauty arrived and I was able to hold it, it was even better, way better, than I’d hoped. Soft, smooth, high quality and beautifully hand crafted, this necklace dates to about 1860 and was made in France, it is marked with the French Boar’s head which was their assay mark for silver. It is set with sparkling marcasites and green, pink and golden gems which I am guessing are pastes, they are too small to test and also closed backed, as is the rest of the pendant. The back is soft and smooth, the marcasites all appear to be present and set. The pendant measures 64.7 mm from the top of the bow to the bottom drop, and 28.5 mm across at the widest point. The drop hangs on a hand made silver chain which is 17 inches in length. The pendant weighs 17.4 grams overall.
I can’t wait to get back to buying in Europe and being able to handle my pieces as I choose, but the Zoom buying has certainly given me a new appreciation for the challenge of buying jewelry online!
