My family owns a house on Cape Cod. One of those old Georgian ones with clapboard siding that’s always peeling from the sea air and wide plank wood floors worn smooth by countless summer of sand covered bare feet. On one side its yard rolls down a hill to a big kettle pond and on the other it has a big, flat yard with a semicircle drive covered in crushed shells. This is the most perfect space in the world for a croquet court, according to me, and I’ve played more games of it than I can count on warm summer days and crisp autumn mornings and even chilly spring evenings. This wonderful game was very popular with the Victorians so it’s no surprise they’d make a fob which features it.
This wonderful little gold fob was hand crafted in about 1900 of 15 karat gold. It is set in the bottom with a round flat slice of sardonyx. The fob measures 31.2 mm from top to bottom and 15.4 mm across at the widest point, it’s 13.6 mm across at the bottom, were the stone is set. The fob weighs 2.4 grams. This lovely fob is unmarked and tests as 15 karat gold.
