The Norwegian word for shine is Sølje (Solje), and this antique brooch does just that. These jewels have been made in Norway for generations, so much that the word solje in Norway is synonymous for jewelry. These brooches were handcrafted, named after the way that the tiny golden cups gather the sunshine and spread it all around. Brooches like this one would mark the important passages of a woman’s life, from coming of age to marriage and birth to the inheritance of brooches from loved ones along the way. A silver thread that bound families, some said the large Solje brooch worn for a woman’s wedding day created a magical music to keep the Mountain Kid from kidnapping you on the way to the alter!

This wonderful silver brooch with its gilded golden discs was hand crafted around 1900. It measures 77.6 mm wide and 47 mm top to bottom and is marked with ‘830S’ for the content of the silver. The brooch weighs 10.9 grams.
