Antique Picture Agate Ring in 14k Gold and Silver, Owl Detail

There is nothing of the commonplace about this beautiful ring. I was drawn to it’s clean lines and the way it showcases the stunning beauty of a simple and yet complex slice of nature. The heart of this ring is a fabulous, pseudo-octagonal, double step cut, picture agate gem.

The frame and mounting of this ring are hand crafted in metal that tests as 14 karat gold and the sides have little applied silver animals on them. One side has a very clear owl, the other side appears too worn to quite make out, perhaps it was a rooster? The rooster and owl were commonly used together to signify night and day and this agate certainly has aspects of both. It was probably made around 1890, in Germany maybe, based on the 14 karat gold, or even American?

This lightly constructed and endearing ring is well-worn but stable and sturdy, the agate measures 12.1 x 11.1 x 3 mm. The ring is a re-sizable 8.5 US and weighs 2.5 grams.
