The Victorians had a special love for coral jewelry. Since Roman times, coral has been believed to possess the power to ward off evil and danger. In 1845 the Prince of Two Sicilies gave his bride, the Duchess d'Aumale, a fabulously memorable parure of coral jewelry. Thus began a fashion trend that lasted through the turn of the century and beyond.
In fact, many women today still love red coral jewelry, myself included. To tell you the truth, I've had this ring for a little while now, I keep putting off listing it for sale because, well, I'm not entirely certain that I want to part with it! The fantastically smooth, navette shaped cabochon of deep orange coral has strong red undertones and measures 17.5 mm long and 10 mm across and is approximately 5 mm deep. The ring is marked on the outside of the shank with two hallmarks, one is a lions head which indicates that it was made in the Netherlands between 1814-1905, the other one I can’t quite make out. I purchased it in Amsterdam and think it dates to about 1890, it’s such a classical style so it's very hard to know. It's hand made and has a lovely sparkle to the gold work, it test as 18k gold. It is a size 8.5 and weighs 2.6 grams. The overall size of this ring is 21.5 mm north to south and 10 mm across, it sits 7 mm off the finger and narrows to 2.3 mm at the back of the band.
Wear this beautiful red coral ring and ward off danger at every turn, it's been working for me!
