The Arts and Crafts movement was born out of a rejection of the industrial revolution. Artist felt that the mechanization of creating daily objects detracted from the enjoyment of daily life as a whole. Furniture, household items, even jewelry, once made completely by hand, were now being machined, assembly lined, destroying the unique nature of hand crafted goods. Much of the jewelry done in the Arts and Crafts style was done in silver, using gems that were inexpensive and easily sourced, but some of the firms of this era, working in this style, used gold, and I’m always a little extra thrilled when I come across these beautiful representations of the craft.
This fabulous ring was made by the firm of Murrle, Bennett & Company, an Anglo-German firm started by Ernst Murrle and J.B. Bennett, which produced pieces for retail by the store 'Liberty and Co.', famous London Arts and Crafts dealers. The company was in existence from 1886-1914, this ring was most likely made around 1900. It is completely hand crafted, of course, in 18 karat gold, and is set with a bright blue cabochon of turquoise which measures 7.7 x 6.9 x 3.3 mm. The overall face of this ring measures 14.4 mm north to south and 17 mm across, it sits 5.1 mm off the finger and narrows to 1.6 mm at the back of the band. This size 9 ring is marked inside the band with ‘18ct’ and ‘M.B.C’.

I wore it on an Italian terrace framed in by a clay roof with yellow-orange walls. I held a glass of soave, fermented from the grapes I could see lining the hills around me, all the way to the horizon. The sky was turquoise, almost robin’s egg blue, and the sun was as white as the pearls on the ring I wore. I slow danced with the man I love, as the white sun turned orange and set into the Tuscan hills, turning everything around them gold. The silhouette of color matched my ring perfectly, taking my breath away.
This antique French gold ring was handcrafted around 1890. It showcases 18 robin egg blue turquoises encapsulating seven creamy white pearls on a navette-shaped ring face. In 1890, the Birmingham Jewellery and Silversmiths’ Association opened a school specifically for jewelry making on Vittoria Street in Birmingham. More than 125 years later, the Birmingham School of Jewellery is still there, educating students in the worlds of silversmithing, horology, gemology, and more. The school is found at the heart of the city’s Jewellery Quarter, now an urban center with a creative atmosphere. The jewelry trade was once considered the most lucrative career in Birmingham. Apprentices were required to attend the Birmingham School of Art, in which, the branch of Jewellery and Silversmithing was found. The Jewellery Quarter once produced 40% of the UK’s jewelry. It is where many technological advancements in the world of jewelry making were born.
This antique Arts & Crafts silver turquoise drop necklace was handcrafted in England by the Birmingham School around the year 1910. The largest turquoise is a robin egg blue shade with metallic matrices throughout. It’s oval en cabochon cut and oh so lovely. The center turquoise is round en cabochon and the bottom turquoise is oval en cabochon. This necklace was made in silver on a 17.75-inch chain. The drop measures 65 x 25 mm. This piece weighs 9.1 grams. It has been acid tested.
This unapologetically chic necklace is hard for me to give up. It goes so well with a white t-shirt and jeans, and that sundress I wear all the time, and that low cut black dress…

It was always there, around her neck, like it was a part of her. It was a gift from her mother’s mother when she was a child. She rarely took it off, she couldn’t think of a reason to. Honestly, neither can I.
