Antique Souveneir Spoon from Buffalo, Wyoming, Silver and Moss Agate

I’m mostly a jewelry girl, but I do come across the occasional object that I find irresistible and feel compelled to bring home. Even though it is inscribed with “Buffalo, Wyo”, I found this wonderfully cheeky souvenir spoon in London. It was likely brought home by some Victorian who was on a tour of the American continent back in the 1880s.

The silver spoon is made in the shape of a buffalo, playing off the name of this historic town that is nestled in the foothills of the beautiful Big Horn Mountains. The handle is crafted in polished and faceted moss agate, most likely Wind River moss agate, mined in Wyoming.

The spoon is 155 mm (6.25 inches) long and 43 mm (1.75 inches) wide and weighs 17.2 grams. The spoon is marked ‘silver’ on the back and tests as sterling. Hand crafted around 1880-1900.
