Antique Sterling Silver Coral Art Nouveau Earrings

There is nothing else that has the wonderful color of coral. Orange is rare in the gem universe as it is, citrine, carnelian, fire opal and sometimes sapphire can be a lovely orange, but coral has such richness of color that it’s a gem I find myself going back to time after time.

These fantastic earrings were hand crafted in about 1890, most likely in England. They have lovely Art Nouveau lines and are set with four round, smooth, deep orange corals kissed with red. The corals are half drilled in the backs, making me think that these beads were re-used from an earlier, likely Georgian, piece, an early bit of re-cycling. The sterling silver earrings measure 44.5 mm from top to bottom and 15.5 mm wide at the widest point. Together they weigh 5.2 grams. When I purchased these, they had wire tops, but I had my jeweler convert them to posts and hand crafts some butterfly backs, they just didn’t hang well as wires.
