'The Women's Social and Political Union' in England was a group of courageous and strong women who stood up as one and demanded to be counted. The colors of the flags they waved and the buttons they wore were purple (violet) to symbolize the instinctual need in all of us for freedom and dignity, white to symbolize purity, and green, symbolic of hope and the color of Spring and new life. Sometimes these were shortened to Green, White and Violet or GWV for ‘Give Women the Vote’.
Made in England around 1915, this pendant features a large, deep purple oval faceted amethyst surrounded by creamy white pearls. The second halo features sparkling green peridot gems alternating with white pearls and a further amethyst hangs as a tear drop from the bottom. The central amethyst measures 13x9.5x6.8 and weighs about 4.5 carats, the drop is about 1 carat, the 8 round cut peridots are about .3 carats each for 2.4 carats in total weight. The pendant is hand crafted in 15 karat yellow gold and is marked on the back with ‘15ct’, it measures 51.5 mm long and 25.3 mm across and weighs 6.6 grams.
A gorgeous pendant like this worn by an Edwardian lady of means was an outward expression of camaraderie, of hope and the longing for a brighter future for all womankind.
