Even the border is decorated with a geometric engraved pattern, giving the design wonderful depth and movement as it catches the light. The oval case opens at the side to reveal two compartments for photographs or other small keepsakes. One interior frame is missing, something not unusual in a locket that has been opened, filled and treasured for nearly 150 years. It measures 39.8 millimeters from top to bottom including the hanging loop, 25.5 millimeters across and 7.1 millimeters deep, and weighs 6.8 grams.
