The thing about lockets is, they become yours. They hold your photographs. They keep your secrets. They know your meaning. Their beauty and history is just a plus. Lockets began to appear in Europe sometime during the 16th century. They were worn to hide good luck charms, perfume, or tiny love letters. Ladies of the court liked to fill theirs with scents, oils, and vinaigrettes, as the ballroom heat could cause quite a bit of fainting. The popularity of lockets spread to the middle class where they were given as gifts within a gift, with a painted portrait of a lover’s eye, a small note, or a private token, tucked clandestinely inside.
This antique gold oval locket was handcrafted during the late Victorian period, around 1900, in England. It was made in 15 karat gold and features a geometric embossed and engraved motif. Overall, it measures 39 x 25 x 8 mm and weighs 6.9 grams. There are no marks and it has been acid tested.
Wearing a charm like this locket was considered essential for day wear, especially after Prince Albert gifted his beloved Queen Victoria a bracelet of nine heart lockets, in memory of each of their children.
