It matched the color of eyes, like so few things did. They were blue like the ocean before a storm, like a field of blooming bluebells, or like the wings of a morpho butterfly. She wore it because she liked the bands of color inside the stone and how the gold felt cool and then warm on her finger. She wore it because he gave it to her while asking for her hand.
This antique Victorian sapphire and gold ring was handcrafted in London, 1879. An oval faceted sapphire, measuring 7 x 5.2 x 2.8 mm and weighing approximately .82 carats, is set in 18 karat gold. This beautiful natural stone bears some color banding within, giving it what I like to call ‘tiger stripes’. It is fully hallmarked and bears the origin mark of a crown for England, the gold purity mark, “18”, the leopard head mark for London, and the letter date, “D”. This ring is a size 8.25 and weighs 4.7 grams. The ring face measures 10.5 x 13.7 x 2.7 mm off the finger and has a band width of 3.3 mm.
This is a ring to behold. It has color, and sparkle. It would be an amazing engagement ring or birthday surprise.
