Antique Victorian Charming Double Sided Banded Agate Locket Made of Pinchbeck

The thing I love most about Victorian jewelry is the sentiment behind each piece. To my delight, the Victorians used agate throughout the era, with its greatest popularity being the mid-1800’s. It was used to create all sorts of pieces - cut out flowers that showed off the stone’s layers, cabochons in Etruscan Revival jewelry, in cameos, in mourning jewelry, etc..

This locket was a part of this ‘need for agate’ obsession. Those suspicious Victorians believed agate protected you from thunder, sorcery, poison, and demonic possession. Basically, it was a talisman for all of life’s ailments, including drunkenness.

A banded agate locket like this could have easily been a way to protect whoever wore it, or whoever's photograph is laid inside. This antique pendant was handcrafted in pinchbeck. It’s oval in shape and measures 28 x 25 x 13 mm and weighs 10.9 grams. Each of the cabochon banded agate stones are in various shades of white and brown. They measure 27 x 22 mm each. This wonderful wearable locket has been acid tested.

This darling piece is awaiting a sentimental photograph of that special someone or furry friend. Although the Victorians might have worn it outdoors during a thunderstorm, I still can’t recommend venturing out into a storm no matter how much agate you don!
