Antique Victorian Cut Steel Butterfly Earrings with Gold Wires

Made to mimic diamonds when worn by candlelight, cut steel had a following and appeal all of its own, and even out priced gold jewelry for a time. Originally, cut steel was made from the old horseshoes which littered the streets of Britain. Each small steel bead would be laboriously hand cut and polished and then drilled. These earrings have a gorgeous butterfly shape.

Riveted onto brass plates and hung on 9 karat yellow gold wires, these lovely earrings have a lot of sparkle and a happy appeal. They measure 1 inch across and 1.25 inches long. Care should be taken to avoid getting cut steel to wet as it may rust (hence the rarity of these jewels). These earrings together weigh 6.4 grams. Made in England around 1850.
