Antique Victorian Deep Purple Amethyst and Diamond Ring in 18k Gold

After the death of Prince Albert, Queen Victoria turned mourning into an art form. A woman would wear nothing but black for a full year after the death of beloved, after the first year she could add in a bit of white. If would be a full two and half years before she could start to wear color, and a lady had to ease into it. The first color was customarily a deep purple, like the rich stones in this amethyst ring, a ring that would have and could have been the perfect first foray into the end of the mourning period.

This handcrafted Victorian ring was likely made around 1890 in England. It is marked as 18 karat gold and has been tested to verify content. The three amethysts are a fantastic, deep velvety purple and interspersed with four rose-cut diamonds. The center stone measures 7.3 x 6 x 5 mm and weighs 1.2 carats, the other two are 5.5 x. 5.2 x 3.5 mm and add up to an additional 1.1 carats. The ring is a size 7 US and weighs 4.9 grams. The face of the ring measures 12 mm from east to west and 7.5 mm from north to south, the ring tapers to 2 mm wide at the back of the band.
