Antique Victorian Garnet Bee Bug Brooch Pin

The word garnet originates from the Greek, ‘pyropes’, meaning “fiery-eyed”. It’s the perfect description for these radiant stones. These gems are a special shade of deep brick red. Although garnets have been in use since the Bronze Age, it was the Victorian Era that saw them at the height of fashion. These precious stones took over the jewelry market, it was ever so popular to pave set these glowing rocks into a pendant, necklace, or brooch, the really lovely pieces (in my humble opinion) are also set with beautiful, rich cabochon stones. The Victorians were also a bit obsessed with using nature as inspiration for accessory design. An insect motif like this was not unusual!

This precious antique Victorian garnet bee or bug brooch (I think it might be a hornet?) was handcrafted around 1880. It was made in traditional low carat garnet gold and is pave set with 67 sparkling, faceted wine-red garnets, and two large juicy cabochon garnets. It measures 35 x 53 mm overall. The two largest garnets make up the body of this bug motif, while the rest fill in the wings and antennae. It weighs 7.5 grams and has been acid tested.

Take this buzzing bug of garnets with you wherever you go to add a pop of color to a white blouse, ride along on your lapel or secure your scarf.
