Antique Victorian Garnet Pansy Brooch Pin

I strolled the Rue de Bastille on a windy winter day, around New Years. I was surviving on chocolate croissants and espresso for every meal. I’m not complaining, quite the opposite, really. I wore this brooch to match the holiday spirit and the colors of the season. It glowed on the lapel of my pea coat as I made my way to a champagne tasting, where there were macarons and pâté, not mixed together of course. I sat down in the basement of a hole-in-the-hall wine cellar and met a writer from Brussels. He explained that garnets were named after pomegranate seeds. We toasted to the gemstone and ate way too many macarons.

This antique garnet pansy brooch was handcrafted during the Victorian era, around 1880 in England. It showcases 5 large and juicy cabochon cut, teardrop shaped garnets and 6 smaller round faceted stones. This piece was crafted in garnet gold, a special low karat gold made specifically to set garnets, it has been acid tested. This brooch pin weighs 6.6 grams and measures 29.6 x 20.2 x 7 mm.

The word ‘pansy’ stems from the French ‘pensée’, which means, ‘thought’. Je pense que vous allez adorer cette broche!
