Antique Victorian Gold Compass Pendant Fob

Magnetism was discovered as far back as 4 BC in China. There are records dating to the Han Dynasty that discuss a magnetic south-facing lodestone. This technology was initially used for feng shui and helped to align architecture and interiors. It wasn’t until 1117 that magnetism was used for navigation. It’s now considered a basic concept, the use of a magnetized needle that lines with the Earth’s magnetic field. It’s no coincidence that magnetism is also used to describe the attraction of one person for another, sometimes we can’t help but be drawn to another human, as unable to resist as the needle on a compass trying to resist due north.

This amazing antique gold compass pendant was handcrafted in Europe around 1900. It’s a round 10 karat rose gold pendant or watch fob that measures 30.5 x 21 x 7.8 mm and weighs 7.3 grams. The arrow inside this compass still moves according to the direction it’s faced, and the cardinal directions can still be read. It is hallmarked with the gold purity mark, “10” and it bears a shield mark with a cross inside. It has been acid tested.

This charming pendant would make a fantastic gift for that special someone you always want to be able to find their way back to you!
