Antique Victorian Jet Earrings Mourning

There were strict rules when it came to mourning in the latter half of the 19th century, when these fabulous earrings were made. A widow would wear mourning black for two years, after which she could go into half mourning and introduce a bit of gray, lavender and lilac. A pair of earrings as stylish as these were perfect for the lady in mourning and were stylish enough to be worn long after the mourning period ended.

This pair of antique Victorian earrings are made of jet, with 9 karat gold wires. They were handcrafted in England around 1870 and feature a bell-shaped design. Each earring measures 49 x 17.2 mm and together, they weigh 4.4 grams. They bear no marks and have been acid tested.

Jet, a dark brown-black coal formed from fossilized wood from the Jurassic Period, has been used for thousands of years to craft all types of jewelry as well as personal objects.
