Antique Victorian 'Mizpah' Locket Rose Gold

There is a biblical phrase, found in Genesis 31:49, commonly known as the Mizpah, which is a Hebrew word meaning, ‘watchtower’. It reads, ‘May the Lord watch between me and thee when we are absent from one another’. Victorians and Edwardians adored this phrase, as it marked an agreement between two people, with God as their witness. It adorned many a gift given between a couple during the Victorian Era, and again during The Great War, as it was meant for two people who were to be apart for some time, that had promised loyalty to one another.

This antique Victorian rose gold locket was handcrafted in England around 1890. It’s a beautiful, sideways oval locket with the word, “MIZPAH” on the front, surrounded with flowers and ivy leaves (another English sentiment of passion and loyalty). It opens from the top revealing a space for two tiny photographs. This locket pendant measures 47 x 37 x 13 mm and weighs 10.1 grams. There are no marks and it has been acid tested at 9 karat gold.

This is a romantic locket with a place to set your memories, it can’t get much better than that.
