Antique Victorian Mourning Locket, in 15k Gold with Dark Blue Enamel and Pearl Horseshoe

I have to admit that nothing makes my heart go pitter pat like a lovely inscription or date on a piece of jewelry. That little extra connection to the history of a piece of jewelry gives me a bit of a thrill. So, you can imagine how excited I was when I opened this wonderful locket to reveal it’s original and pristine interior, a tiny time capsule, this one.

Hand crafted in 15 karat yellow gold, this beautiful locket is enameled with dark blue stripes and the front is set with a gold horseshoe which is further set with 14 creamy white pearls. The locket was no doubt made as a mourning piece, the blue enamel would have made it wearable for a woman who was in her second phase of mourning. The interior has a little golden shield-shaped plaque that is engraved with ‘E D IX, July 20th, 1897’, the other side contains an artful spray of hair with golden wire work, both behind their original glass. The locket measures 35 mm from top to bottom and 20 mm across, it is 8 mm thick and weighs 7.3 grams. Made in England around 1897.
