Antique Victorian Opal Solitaire Ring Gold

$ 1,290.00

There are some cultures that say that opals were formed when the an angry god hurled a rainbow at the earth and it shattered. In the place where the pieces landed, opals were formed. Looking deeply into this stunning opal ring makes it easy for one to believe that this is true.

This antique Victorian opal solitaire gold ring was handcrafted in England around 1890. It features a rectangle cabochon precious opal at the center. The opal measures 11.4 x 8.7 x 2.3 mm. It’s set in 18 karat gold and has been acid tested. The ring face measures 18.4 x 18.1 x 6.7 mm off the finger and the band width is 2.6 mm at the back. This ring is a size 7.75 and it weighs 4.7 grams.

“Precious opals” are known for their diffraction of light, called ‘play of color’, in which rainbow colors shine from inside the stone like a kaleidoscope of firelight. The play-of-color in precious opals is caused by the diffraction of light that bounces between the silica spheres that are stacked like microscopic marbles in a box.
