Antique Victorian Opal Solitiare Ring in 14k Gold

Opals look best at twilight, I don’t know why, but the light from the setting sun seems to bounce around inside them and bring out the myriad of colors that make them so beguiling.

This wonderful opal ring was hand crafted around 1900 of 14 karat gold. It has beautifully carved shoulders and a lovely openwork mount. The gold is two-tone, the shank has a rosy hue and the mount and shoulders are a brighter, yellow gold, but it’s the fabulous stone that is the star of this show. This opal measures 14 x 11.5 x 4.9 mm and weighs approximately 4.5 carats. The ring is marked with ’14k’ and is likely European in origin, although I’m not certain of it’s exact country of manufacture. The ring is a size 5.75 US and could be re-sized to suit, it weighs 3.6 grams.

This stone has a wonderful play of color, with a lot of vibrant blues and greens and a touch of fiery orange and red.
