Antique Victorian Sardonyx Locket, Shield Shaped in 15k Gold

Those crafty Victorians loved carving their seals, initials, coat of arms and anything else with a sentiment into hard stones like onyx and sardonyx, amethyst, and more.  Sometimes, they created the jewelry first and then carved the item later to suit the wearer, such as the case with this wonderful locket.

Handcrafted in 15 karat gold, the locket is set on one side with a creamy shield shaped carved sardonyx and the other side is beautifully engraved with a modified compass motif and a myriad of curly cues. The inside has two oval frames to hold your treasured photos. It has no marks but has been acid tested to verify the gold content. It measures 1 1/2 inches long including the bale and just over 1 1/4 inches wide and weighs 10.6 grams. Made in England in about 1870.
