Antique Victorian Silver 'Mizpah' Locket Pendant

There is a biblical phrase, found in Genesis 31:49, commonly known as the Mizpah, which is a Hebrew word meaning, ‘watchtower’. It reads, ‘May the Lord watch between me and thee when we are absent from one another’. Victorians and Edwardians adored this phrase, as it marked an agreement between two people, with God as witness. It was a common gift between a couple during the Victorian Era, and again during The Great War, as it was meant for two people who were to be apart for some time, that had promised loyalty to one another.

This antique Victorian Mizpah silver locket was handcrafted in Birmingham, England, in 1879. It’s an oval shaped pendant embossed with the romantic word, “Mizpah” on the front, and an elegant floral design on the back. When opened, this locket reveals two covered doors lined in light pink fabric. Overall, this pendant weighs 65.2 x 40.5 x 13.8 mm and weighs 21.3 grams. It has been fully hallmarked and bears the anchor for Birmingham, the lion passant for England, the date letter, “e”, and a maker’s mark which reads, “R.P”.

A romantic locket with a place for memories? Yeah, it can’t get much better than that. Oh wait – it’s also adorable!
