Art Deco Sautoir Necklace with Lavender Jade Eggplant on Silk Cord

The 1920s ushered in a new silhouette for the ladies, one in which the dress elongated into the most elegant columnar styles. The beauty and elegance of this form was often rendered in silk and velvet and embroidered or trimmed in sequins. These elongated styles required long necklaces and the French happened to have the perfect word for such a thing, the Sautoir.

This Sautoir necklace has a decidedly Eastern feel. It is hand made with a fantastic knotted green silk cord which is set with disks of some sort of shell or possibly cellulose, I’m not sure. From the bottom hangs an eggplant carved in variegated lavender and white jade. The necklace is 38 inches long the bottom jade drop measures 47.4 mm long, 28.2 mm across and is 13.5 mm deep. The seven disks interspersed at the bottom of the necklace measure 25 mm across. The necklace weighs 25.1 grams.
