Arts & Crafts Silver Enamel Pendant Necklace with Mother of Pearl by Charles Horner

Whenever I’m in London I try to sneak a couple of hours to myself and visit Liberty and Company on Regent Street in the West End. On my last trip I had to sacrifice my ‘me’ time and run a few errands (including a stop at my favorite chocolatier) on New Bond Street. With my sense of direction, it wasn’t surprising I went right instead of left while leaving the chocolate shop, but imagine my delight when I popped out onto Regent Street, directly in front of Liberty’s! I must say, it was fate.

This Arts & Crafts silver enamel necklace was handcrafted in 1907 and is just the kind of jewel that would have been retailed at a store like Liberty & Co.. It was made in Chester, England by famed silver smith Charles Horner. It’s an organic motif with a mother of pearl at the center with cool shades of blue and green and purple enamel set in silver, hanging from a 16-inch chain. The pendant measures 82.5 x 25.5 mm. This antique necklace weighs 8.1 grams. It has been fully hallmarked and bears the lion mark for English sterling silver, the wheat sheaves mark for Chester, the date letter, “g”, and the maker’s mark, “C.H”.

I adore wearing pieces like this – it’s architectural, but in a subtle way. I hope you enjoy this piece as much as I enjoyed finding it!
