Early Victorian Memorial Ring 18k Gold Black Enamel Hair 'Susanna'

$ 1,750.00

"I had a dream the odder night, When ebery thing was still
I thought I saw Susanna A Coming down de hill;
The buck-wheat cake was in her mouth, The tear was in her eye;
Says I, “I’m coing from de south, Susanna, don’t you cry.”- Stephen Foster, 1847

The Susanna who is immortalized on this ring most certainly didn’t live long enough to hear her name ensconced in these icon lyrics for ages to come. I don’t know if this Susanna cried, but she most certainly died. This ring was made to honor her in London in the year 1844.

This wonderful early Victorian memorial band ring was hand crafted in 18 karat gold in 1844 and is fully hallmarked with English date and place marks as well as the makers mark ‘ID’. This ring is wrapped around the band with intricately interwoven hair (presumably that of poor Susanna) and topped with a plaque of gold enameled in black with the simple name, “Susanna”. This ring is not resizable, it’s a size 7.5 and is 7 mm wide, it weighs 5.7 grams.
