Edwardian Mizpah Double Heart Brooch Silver

This beautiful heart brooch is engraved with an old biblical phrase, found in Genesis 31:49, commonly known as Mizpah, which is a Hebrew word meaning ‘watchtower’. It reads, ‘The Lord watch between me and thee when we are absent from one another’. Victorians and Edwardians adored this phrase, as it marked an agreement between two people, with God as witness. It was a common gift between a couple during the Victorian Era, and again during The Great War, as it was meant for two people who were to be apart for some time, that had promised loyalty to one another.

This antique Edwardian brooch pin was handcrafted in Birmingham, England, in 1909. It’s made in silver and features two hearts, tied together with a bow. It’s embossed with the word, ‘MIZPAH’, alongside a pretty leave motif. It is fully hallmarked and bears the anchor mark, for Birmingham, the lion passant, for English sterling silver, the letter ‘k’, for 1909, and a maker’s mark. It measures 20.2 x 39 mm and weighs 3.4 grams.

This antique and meaningful piece has been awaiting a spot at the top of your jewelry box!
