Fabulous Antique English Slide Locket Pendant Clover Pearl

The Victorians had a whole secret language of symbolism, flowers, plants, colors, animals, objects like anchors and arrows and crescents all had their own meanings. The clover was one of those with a hidden meaning, it meant ‘think of me’, the perfect sentiment for a locket.

This sweet locket dates to the very end of the Victorian period, and is so wonderfully made. When closed the locket looks like a simply clover pendant with a pearl at its center, but slide it open and it reveals three heart shaped lockets hidden within. I believe the these lockets hold hair at the moment and probably have since its earliest days, but it could be transformed to hold something else. This locket was hand crafted in England around 1900, it’s inscribed to the reverse with two sets of initials in very different styles, likely they were done at different times. The monogram of ‘MOI’ and the initials ‘W.L’ are on the backs of two of the leaves and the third contains a date, ‘Feb: 16th 1904’, when the locket is open it reveals from the reverse a mark of ’15’ for 15 karat gold, of which it’s created. The locket measures 32.3 mm top to bottom and 27 mm across, it’s 7.8 mm thick. This wonderful locket is quite hefty and weighs 8.7 grams.
