French Pierrot Lunaire Silver Slide Locket Antique Art Nouveau

Here he is, sweet Pierrot, basking in the moonlight. This well loved and wayward clown was the subject of literature and art going back to the late seventeenth century. He was seen as a somewhat tragic figure, always falling prey to his own naiveté.

The writer Albert Giraud published a series of 50 poems about Pierrot, called Pierrot Lunaire, or “Moonstruck Pierrot”. Many of the poems involved the moon; in one Pierrot does his white face makeup using moonlight, in another he dances drunkenly in moonlight. The poems would eventually be set to music by Arnold Schoenberg and the piece was premiered in Berlin in 1912 to great acclaim.

This absolutely fantastic French slide locket features Pierrot, in his skull cap, neck ruffle and flouncy attire, having a chat with an animated sliver of a moon. The reverse shows just clouds floating across a night sky. This beautiful and unusual locket contains two mirrors as was common for these, one is standard and the other is slightly convex so that the lady could see her whole face at once.  This large locket measures 66.3 mm long including the bale and 38.4 mm across, it’s 8.2 mm deep and weighs 29 grams. The locket has a French silver mark and a French makers mark on the top ring.
