Georgian Silver Paste Converted Stomacher Pendant Stunning

When you think of Ladies in Georgian dress, you picture it in your mind, even if you don’t know what it’s called. It’s that long V panel at the front of a woman’s dress, that extends down from the decolletage to the waist and sometimes even many inches down past the waist (making it incredibly uncomfortable to sit down!). It’s called a stomached, makes sense, I guess? The stomacher was often covered in embroidery and jewels and jewelry worn here is often called by the same name, a stomacher.

Even though this Georgian Grande Damme most likely started out life as a stomacher. The three panels would have been sewn onto the fabric stomacher in just the same configuration that you see them here. At some point stomachers went out of style (thank goodness for that, right ladies?) and the jewelry was converted to be worn in other ways. If you look at the back of this wonderful pendant you can see the joints that were added to keep it tougher and the long silver bale at the top to hang it by. These pieces were likely added in the early to mid Victorian era to accommodate for the newer Victorian styles.

Hand crafted in 800 silver in about 1780-1800, this pendant is impressive both in size and sparkle. The pendant is set with 26 round faceted and very sparkly paste gems. Pastes (glass gems) were new and novel and something of a rarity when this beauty was made, so it was not unusual to see them in very high quality pieces from this time period. The pendant measures an impressive 82.6 mm long and 46.7 wide, it is as beautifully finished on the back as on the front. This piece is marked ‘800’ on the back for 800 silver and weighs 16.5 grams. This pendant is shown a chain for photographing purposes, the chain is not included.
