Gold Victorian Red Paste Amethyst Brooch Pin Pendant

The sun was ripe with heat and the soil we hiked on was soggy from the previous night’s storm. The redwoods stood like giants against the summer’s air, as if they could conquer it. I fixed my hat and adjusted the brooch that perched on its side band.

‘A little warm for a hat, isn’t it, Victoria?’

I kept hiking, large strides, passing him as I went. The stones on my hat reflected the light from the sky.

‘That amethyst, it’s as brilliant as the sun.’

‘Brighter, my dear, don’t look directly at it.’

This antique Victorian gold brooch was handcrafted in England around 1860. It’s a colorful flower-shaped pin featuring a square cushion-cut amethyst at the center, surrounded by a halo of 10 red faceted round pastes. The amethyst measures 14 x 14.5 x 11.2 mm and weighs approximately 13.26 carats. The amethyst is set in 9 karat gold while the pastes are set in 15 karat gold, and the stem is silver. It has been acid tested. Overall, this piece measures 31 x 19 mm and it weighs 9.3 grams. This versatile piece is not only a fabulous brooch but also a beautiful pendant.

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, there’s just something about amethysts. They’re the birthstone for February and my favorite gemstone.
