Important Antique Art Nouveau Opal and Diamond Brooch Pin Pendant Retailed by F. W. Drosten Jewelery Co.

Every once in a while I come across a piece of American jewelry while shopping in Europe and every once in a while I come across a piece of jewelry with a fabulous tale to tell. This wonderful pendant brooch combination is both of these things, and so of course I couldn’t resist bringing it home with me!

Here’s the tale of this gorgeous piece as far as I am able to tell… Frederick William Drosten was a contemporary of Louis Comfort Tiffany and the owner of the F. W. Drosten Jewelry Company of St. Louis, Missouri. His gorgeous and most prestigious high end jewelry store was a mecca for the burgeoning uber wealthy of the American Middle West, the railroad barons, oil barons and other newly rich American Industrialists. And while Drosten’s shop didn’t produce jewelry, they sold only the finest, including beautiful gold pocket watches made by the exclusive Swiss maker, Vacheron, and fabulous silver by the famous firm of Redlich & Co.. They were known to place their own label on these items, sometimes right over the mark of the original maker.

This fantastic Art Nouveau brooch was retailed by Drosten, but the maker is unknown, what is certain is that it would have been made by an important American jewelry designer of the early 20th Century. Hand crafted in 14 karat gold, this gorgeous piece is set with an oval of beautiful blue boulder opal that measures 16.3 mm north to south and 11.3 mm across and is 6.3 mm deep and has an approximate weight of 6.61 carats. It is also set with 6 old European cut round diamonds of approximately .08 carats each or .4 carats total weight. Hanging from the bottom of this wonderful piece is a bezel set cushion cut old European diamond that measures 4.8 x 4.4 x 3.6 mm and weighs approximately .65 carats. This stunning and historical piece can be worn equally well as a brooch or a pendant necklace. It is marked with the applied ‘DROSTEN’ which was added by the retailer and tests as 14 karat gold. This piece represents a most impressive and yet very wearable example of Art Nouveau craftsmanship. It weighs 11.5 grams and measures 44 mm across, 38.8 mm north to south and is 11.1 mm deep.

Made around 1910 in America, this important piece would make a wonderful addition to any collection of Art Nouveau or Arts & Crafts jewelry!
