Large Victorian Scottish Brooch Citrine Deer Pin

Hunting, in the 1870’s, wasn’t just a man’s game. Women were invited to attend, and they most certainly knew how to dress for the occasion. An adventurous lady of means would ride sidesaddle on her horse, while wearing red to prevent any shots from coming her way. This woman would have known that thematic accessories were also required, such as a hunting-inspired brooch to accent her black riding hat.

This awesome antique Victorian citrine silver brooch was handcrafted around 1870 in the Scottish style. It features a quadruple deer head motif with the antlers holding the oval faceted citrine in place. This stone measures 27.4 x 19.3 x 10.5 mm and weighs approximately 29.43 carats. The large brooch weighs 41.7 grams and measures 69.5 x 63 x 21.5 grams. There are no marks on this fabulous piece, and it has been acid tested.

Deer have symbolized many things over the years. To Native Americans, they were considered messengers. Other cultures regarded them as a symbol of harmony.
