Lovely Antique Victorian Niello Locket Gold Star

Niello is a metalwork technique that fuses a dark mix of metal alloys onto a silver base which has been engraved to reveal a pattern. Once polished smooth, it holds a metallic luster that is very sturdy and very beautiful. Ancient Egyptians likely created this copper, silver, and lead sulphide technique. The Ancient Romans made use of it as well, spreading the technique throughout Europe during the Roman occupation. During the Renaissance, it met its height in popularity as Francesco Francia and Maso Finiguerra (both goldsmiths and artists) mastered the skill. The Victorians loved anything ancient and so the Niello trend came back to England at the end of the 18th century and stuck around until the beginning of the 20th century.

This antique Victorian niello locket was handcrafted in England around 1890. It’s a sleek pendant with a curving symmetrical design on the front and back, struck with a golden colored star on the front. It measures 37 x 28.5 mm and weighs 6.2 grams. It bears the silver fineness mark, “800”.

This locket takes a fun twist on a traditional silhouette, it’s a sweetly sentimental gift for any occasion.
