Lovely Georgian Pear Shaped Vinaigrette Locket Pendant Sterling Silver

When this gorgeous little Vinaigrette was made the streets of London, and really of any big city in Europe, were unpaved and trodden by horses. Horses that pooped. A lot. What was a lady to do when the streets were constantly offensive to ones sense of smell? Well, they had one of these, a Vinaigrette, a small trinket that was made to hold a sponge soaked with perfume. A lady would open it up and breath in a much improved scent. We don’t have these problems with horse paddies as much today, but there’s many a time on a subway in Manhattan at rush hour that I wouldn’t have minded having a Vinaigrette handy!

This Georgian beauty was hand crafted in sterling silver in the shape of pear. It is 34 mm high and 18 mm across at the widest part. Inside is a small cavity with a silver grate which would have held the sponge. The pendant was originally hallmarked but it’s gotten warn and the marks are no longer legible. This wonderful piece has been carefully acid tested for purity and weighs 4.7 grams.

Hand made in England in about 1820.
