Evoking images of deep green rainforests, looking at this wonderful ring makes me think of Indiana Jones, hat pushed down firmly on his had, rucksack hung over his shoulder as he searches for lost treasures deep in the lush jungles. Maybe he is near Chichen Itza, the most important city in the Maya region, when he stumbles and lands on something smooth and cool, he picks it and brushes off the centuries of dirt to discover a carved Jade bead, a sign that he is on the right track.
This fantastic ring is a little bit outside of my normal wheelhouse, but I just couldn’t resist it. When I picked it up I could feel the millennia of history contained in its charming face. With its wide, flat nose and big open eyes, this bead was carved by the Mayan people in about 300-800 AD in Nephrite Jade. It has much more recently been mounted in an absolute chonk of 18 karat gold, over an ounce of it. The ring is a petite size 6 and we’d be happy to size it up for a larger hand. The bead itself measures 28.6 x 23.5 x 6.5 mm and the overall face of the ring is 26.2 mm north to south and 28.6 mm across, it sits 9 mm off the hand and the band is quite wide at the back at 7 mm. The ring is unmarked but has been acid tested to verify content, not that you’d doubt it based on the sheer weight of 42.8 grams.
This pre-Columbian treasure has such personality that we nicknamed him Charles.
