Rare Alexander Ritchie Silver Iona Cross Chain Necklace

Alexander Ritchie and his wife, Euphemia (how great is that name?) built a studio behind their cottage on Iona, a small island on the western coast of Scotland, in 1889. They produced silver jewelry and items based on the designs of the ancient Cels and Vikings which abounded in Iona and it’s fellow Isles, Skye and Mull. The Ritchie's would end up producing some of the most sought after pieces of the early 20th Century.

This rare and fantastic Cross with its original chain were made by Ritchie around 1915. The cross measures 82 mm long and 23.6 mm across, it is marked on the reverse with ‘Iona’ and ‘AR’. The chain is 23 inches long and is set with six small plaques each with viking ships on one side and crosses on the other. The necklaces closes in the back with a large hook and eye clasp. This wonderful sterling silver necklace weighs 35.2 grams.
