Silver Lion Rampant Seal Fob Pendant Hallmarked 1890

I like to think that the “V” on this seal stands for “Victoria”. My friends would tell me that’s a bit vain, but I say what’s wrong with a little vanity now and again? Besides, the logical explanation is that this initial did stand for a name, and the Queen and I happen to share the same one. Other perfectly viable options might be victory, Virgo, valor, or even vino, because who couldn’t use a glass of something dry and red every now and then?

This antique Victorian silver seal was handcrafted in London in 1890. It was made in silver and showcases a lion rampant holding a shield. This seal is inscribed with a stylized, “V”. It has been hallmarked and bears the lion passant mark, the date letter, “P”, the letter, “F”- which is an import mark, and the leopard’s head for London. This seal has been acid tested. It weighs 12.2 grams and measures 33 x 18 x 14.5 mm.

We may never know the true meaning behind this seemingly royal seal with a noble lion and a coat of arms, but it’s quite the game to imagine…vivacity, velvet, vixen, vogue…
