Silver Morpho Butterfly Wing Dragonfly Brooch

Hand crafted in about 1920, this dragonfly has domed crystal wings which are set with rich blue, morpho wings. A medium sized beauty, it measures 39.1 mm from top to bottom and 40.1 mm across. This piece is marked to the reverse with ‘Silver’ and ‘England’ and the makers mark of ‘L.T.’. The brooch weighs 6.3 grams.

In truth, while I sometimes do a bit of shopping in Paris, I don’t usually stay for very long. Instead, I head out to the beautiful little city of Versailles. Known for it’s fabulous palace with it’s wonderful gardens and fountains, I usually avoid that area and the tourists who visit by the busload and instead confine myself to wondering the twisted lanes of the Passage de la Geôle. Like most antiques markets in Europe, it’s best to go on a Saturday, early in the morning, grab a cafe au lait and pretty much any pastry from Antoinette’s nearby and you’ll be a happy shopper as you wander from little shop to little shop. I found this Griffin one chilly Saturday morning as I munched on a Pain au Chocolat and sipped my hot drink, stopping into as many shops as I could to avoid being out in the cold. The shop owner gave me a little side eye for getting crumbs on his counter, but all was forgiven when I left with this guy and a pocket full of other goodies to boot!
This wonderfully hand crafted Griffin brooch was hand crafted in about 1880 with exquisite detail. It is done in 18 karat gold which has been repoussed, or worked out from behind and is set with a wonderful bright rose cut diamond of 4.6 mm across. I’m almost certain that this brooch was made in France, but as it has no hallmarks I can be one hundred percent sure, it is fully unmarked but we’ve acid tested it to verify the 18 karat gold content. It’s a medium-sized brooch, measuring 30.4 mm top to bottom and 34.9 mm across, and it weighs 4.3 grams. It would be stunning on a man or a woman!

Vintage Art Deco Carved Jade Brooch Pin Silver

The word "jade" communicates a sense of mystery. In Mandarin, "jade" (yu) refers to a fine, beautiful stone with a warm color and rich luster, that is skillfully and delicately carved. Jade has been mined and used in jewelry for royalty since the Neolithic period, and is prized internationally still today for it's beauty and symbolism, as well as it's cultural and historical significance. Xu Shen, the Chinese scholar-official and philologist from the Han Dynasty, 58 – 148 BC, noted the five virtues of jade: charity, rectitude, wisdom, courage, and equity. Chinese tradition also holds that jade should be worn as close to the heart as possible. Rings and bracelets go on the left side, as it is nearest the heart. Brooches like this one are perfect to wear on a scarf, blouse or jacket for maximum protection and healing.
This vintage Art Deco jade brooch was handcrafted around 1930, and is almost certainly Chinese in origin. A slender silver frame holds a stunning green and white hand carved jade plaque. The highly detailed, pierced and carved design shows flowering blossoms and leaves of a fruit tree. The jade is 22 mm wide, 48 mm in diameter and 4.5 mm in depth, and all together the brooch weighs 12.5 grams. There are no marks, but it has been professionally acid tested and is Sterling silver.

Antique Commemoritive Silver Danish Battle Brooch Pin

This fascinating brooch is an ode to the history of Norway. It was 1204 and the King, King Haakon, was dead, he had been unmarried and left no heirs apparent. However, after his death a woman named Inga appeared with a child she claimed was his, saying she’d been his concubine for a time in 1203.
In the winter of 1205/1206 the young child with the claim to the throne was under threat from others who would have the throne for themselves. A plan was hatched to bring young Haakon to safety, but the way across the mountains from Lillehammer to Osterdalen was blocked by a blizzard. Two warriors, called ‘Birkenbeiner (or birch legs) Warriors’ for the bark shoes they wore; took the young child and skied him to safety, an occasion which is still commemorated in Norway with a ski event called the ‘Birkenbeinerrennet’.
This brooch shows the Birkenbeiner on their skies with axe and shield, and spears in hand. If you look just under the beard of the figure in the foreground you can see the face of little Haakon peeking out from behind his swaddle. Around the outside edge, this brooch reads “Birkebeinerne Føre Den Unge Haakon Haakonssøn Paa Ski Til Throndhjem“, which translates as “The Birch Legs Save Young Haakon Haakonsson on Skis to Trondheim”.
This wonderfully large, hand crafted brooch is quite stunning in its detail and craftsmanship, the image seems to be taken directly from the 1869 painting ‘Birkebeinerne’ by Knud Larsen Bergslien which is located at The Ski Museum in Oslo. I suspect that it was made in Norway in about 1900. The brooch is round and measures 60.2 mm across, it weighs 28.5 grams and is marked ‘830S’ for the silver content.
In the summer of 1218, Haakon’s mother, Inga, underwent a ‘trail by ordeal’ to prove his paternity, let’s just say there were hot pokers involved and the woman clearly loved her son. Her beloved child would go on to become King of Norway, King Haakon IV Haakonsson. He would rule from 1217-1263.

This wonderful Art Nouveau brooch features a woman in profile. It was hand crafted in France in about 1900. This wonderful brooch is the form of a pansy with delicate petals that seem to float behind the woman’s head. This is a medium sized brooch, it measures 26.2 mm high and 25.6 mm across, it is marked with the French eagles head mark for 18 karat gold and is signed ‘A. Vaudet’, it weighs 5.9 grams.
