These Opals are fabulous. Let me just say right off the batt that I am not an Opal expert, but I find myself more and more drawn to their subdued charm. This Opal ring took me completely by surprise. It is a larger-than-usual, but fairly typical, three stone Victorian ring, but there is nothing typical at all about these stones. When I put it on my hand I noticed right away that these lovely crystal opals had great fire and play of color, the colors changing from calm reds, oranges and blues to bright and flashing bold blues and greens. The most amazing thing, though, is the way that these opals appear lit from within. That is not some trick of photography or light, it is simply the brilliance and fire of these stones, they almost seem to provide their own light.
This antique Victorian gold opal ring was handcrafted in London in 1900. It was made in 18 karat gold and features a row of three precious and ever changing opals. Each of the opals are round, cabochon cuts in a prong setting supported with engraved shoulders on a size 7.75 ring. Overall, this ring weighs 4.9 grams. The ring face measures 8.3 mm north to south and 18 mm across, it sits 5 mm off the finger. It has been fully hallmarked as it bears the crown mark for England, the gold purity mark, “18”, the leopard head for London, and the date letter, “e”.
This truly lovely English ring just took my breath away and wouldn’t give it back!

Sought after due to its beauty, lusted for due to its likeness to the colors of fire, and adorned by royalty with its representation of health, wisdom, and success in love, the ruby stands the test of time. It’s easy to see why. They’re powerful. The name ruby comes from the Latin, “ruber”, which means simply “red”. According to ancient lore, rubies were thought to be petrified drops of dragon’s blood. Rubies are a precious stone that seem to glow like firelight from within. After all, in the ancient language of Sanskrit, a ruby is known as “ratnaraj”, meaning “king of precious stones”.

“Precious opals” are known for their diffraction of light, called ‘play of color’, in which rainbow colors shine from inside the stone like a kaleidoscope of firelight. The play-of-color in precious opals is caused by the diffraction of light that bounces between the silica spheres that are stacked like microscopic marbles in a box.
