Unusual Art Nouveau Victorian Garland Era Silver Bangle Bracelet

The Aesthetic Movement, which was the driving force behind much of the Victorian silver jewelry that was made in England, began in the 1860s and starting winding down in the last few years of the 1890s. New styles were coming in, Edwardian and Belle Epoque jewelry eschewed chunky Victorian styles moved to a lighter, more ephemeral feel, and the dynamic duo of Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau came sweeping through with something utterly new.

It is exceedingly rare (like this is the first time in 20 years) for me to see a bangle like this one, which shows the clear intersection of the Victorian and Art Nouveau styles. It wasn’t all clean, the changing of style, it was messy at the edges and styles overlapped, sometimes to wonderful effect. This fabulous late Victorian bangle dates to about 1895, it shows the beginnings of the Art Nouveau style, with a nod to the motifs that would sweep though that style and it also has garlands of colored flowers, a very Edwardian motif. The flowers seem to be done with gold and platinum in the overlay, this kind of blue tone to the central flowers is indicative of platinum which was being used in this way a the time, pink gold roses and green gold leafs add to the very three dimensional floral sprays.

This hand crafted bangle is 25 mm wide and would comfortably fit a wrist of up to 6.5 inches. It weighs 27.1 grams, it is unmarked but tests as sterling silver.
