Victorian '1896' Silver Engraved Cross Pendant

$ 320.00

– Sold Out
“God bless you and keep you. 1896.” is the inscription on this lovely silver cross. Was it a prayer for a daughter going into the convent? For a husband going to war in Zanzibar? Clearly the giver had deep affection for the recipient, and we wonder who wore it and took courage from its cool pressure on the skin. Oh, if this cross could tell its story!

During the Victorian Era, cross pendants were given as gifts for so many occasions; Many men and almost every woman wore one! Sometimes the crosses were bedecked in jewels. Often, they were humble and uncomplicated, and, like this one, inscribed only with a year and a simple prayer. This modest cross is dated 1896 and tests as silver. Its engraving is strong and clear and it measures 59.4mm high, 27.5mm across, and 5.3mm deep. It weighs 13.3 grams. There is a mark on the bale that is unidentifiable.

A wonderful addition to your antique collection, or for everyday wear, you’ll always wonder what story this silver cross is trying to tell. Let your imagination take you everywhere!
